"Stranger in America (Extranjera en America)"
The Musical

by Henry Iglesias and Victor Cabrera

Music Sample 1 - "Extranjera en America"

Music Sample 1 - "Solamente"

“Stranger in America” is a masterpiece of drama, laughter, romance, mystery and high adventure. A musical with 37 unforgettable original songs that capture your imagination and embrace your heart.

“Stranger in America” is also a “telenovela” like no one has ever seen: 20 weeks of music, dance and the epic unsung tale of the immigrant. It is also the story of Ana Maria, the 17 year old singer-poet born from a poor little pueblo about to go on an unexpected 10 year odyssey.

The story of Ana is quite a normal and happy one in her little town of San Finbar, until one nightmarish evening. On an isolated country road, the sociopathic town Sheriff known as “Gordo” brutally murders her fiancé in a fit of jealous rage.

Ana goes to the sheriff's shack and confronts him about the killing.“Gordo” tries to rape her, and in self defense she shoots him with his own gun. Her family and friends know that the Federal Police will be here any moment to throw her in jail without a trial, because in this part of the world, there is no justice for the poor. Blanca, her mother, gives Ana the last address her father had in Los Angeles before he stopped writing and mysteriously disappeared 8 years ago, without a trace. Under the cover of Midnight they help her board a slow moving cargo train, a train that steadily rumbles towards the border, towards the north.

Inside the cargo car, Ana meets Berta, her husband Manuel, and their young boy David. As fate would have it, they would end up being a second family to Ana. Manuel leads the family into the dangerous bordertown to search for the man who is legendary there, “Ruben del Hood”. Ruben is an adventurous Samaritan, who helps the poor cross safely into America. He never charges anyone and only lets you pay what you can afford. But tragically, the new family is forced to face the horrors of those who cross illegally, and they helplessly witness the fatal shooting of Manuel by crazed border ranchers.

Arriving in Los Angeles, Ana, Berta, and David find refuge at the home of Ruben's Aunt and Uncle, who kindly open their doors to them and even help them find jobs and start their lives again. Everyone faces the everyday obstacles of being an immigrant, a stranger in a strange land, and ultimately they sacrifice everything in the name of hope.

Ruben realizes how talented Ana is and introduces her to Juan Miguel, a brilliant and passionate musician who keeps his demons in a bottle of booze.
Juan Miguel and Ana soon discover they have chemistry and begin writing beautiful songs together, and slowly but surely, they fall in love.

The two begin to successfully perform in the local club circuit until one fateful night, Alejandro Rey, a famous and flamboyantly gay entertainer walks in, hears Ana sing, and immediately invites her on his International tour to replace one of his backup girls who fell ill. Instead of being happy for her, Juan Miguel feels jealous and abandoned, and in a drunken fit he ends their relationship right there and then. Although hurt, Ana is determined to do what’s best for her and goes on the road with Alejandro. They perform all around the world, while Juan Miguel drowns his sorrows in a bottle of Tequila. Alejandro Rey mentors Ana like the daughter he’s always wanted, and in a short time she begins to find fame as a recording artist.

After returning from the long tour, Ana and Juan get back together. Juan has been spending the last few months with an A.A. group that helps him deal with his alcoholism. The love the two had for each other hasn’t faded, but instead has grown stronger than ever. Berta also re-discovers romance after her tragic experience on the border. She opens her heart to Ruben's Uncle, and the two marry. Young David, after a rough start in a rough school, finally finds his way, and learns English well enough to put him at the top of his class, with an unshakeable dream to be a doctor.

Everything seems to finally be going well, but unfortunately Ana’s nightmare is not yet over. The past has followed her to Los Angeles, and “Gordo” reappears into her new life.

The bullet that Ana put in him didn’t kill him, but instead left him deformed and full of nothing but hate and vengeance for Ana, and he will do anything - and kill anyone - to get to her. He leaves a trail of dead bodies as he stalks her obsessively across two countries, watching and waiting for the perfect moment to bring her and everyone she loves a fresh Hell and a bloody and unforgettable finale.
